A Devotional:

Who Are You?

“Now this is what the Lord says—the One who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel—“do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.”

– Isaiah 43:1

You are Special, a book by Max Lucado is one of my favorite children’s books. It is a tale about Eli, the woodcarver, helping Punchinello understand how special he is—no matter what other Wemmicks may think. It’s a very important message for children (and adults)…regardless of how the world evaluates them, God cherishes each of them, just as they are.

We all have those times we allow others, who don’t know us, to define us. We receive the labels from others and live at the mercies of someone else’s summation of who we are. We trade the truth about ourselves for a lie.

So, who are we? Let’s see what scripture says about who we are. Only God has the ability to define us because He created us!

  • He calls you beloved. (Romans 9:25)
  • You are His treasured possession. (Deuteronomy 7:6)
  • You are His child. (John 1:12)
  • You are free. (John 8:36)
  • You have been redeemed. (Ephesians 1:7)
  • You have been and can be forgiven. (Hebrews 10:17; 1 John 1:9)

And what about the God who created us, the forever unchanging God of Hebrews 13:8, the One who pursues us, who knows us personally?

  • He knew each of our days before we were conceived. (Psalm 139:16)
  • Our name is written on the palm of His hands. (Isaiah 49:16)
  • It is our name which He has called “mine”. (Isaiah 43:1)
  • It is the hairs on our heads that are numbered. (Luke 12:7)
  • It is our tears that He keeps count. (Psalm 56:8)
  • He is for us. (Psalm 56:9)
  • It was for us that He died. (Romans 5:8)

Others will label us all our lives.  Think about the labels others have placed on you. Here is the only label that really matters.

“Now this is what the Lord says—the One who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel—“do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.”

In You Are Special, Punchinello went to visit his maker, Eli.  Eli told him that the labels only stick if they matter to you. Eli went on to tell him, “the more you trust my love, the less you care about their labels. Come see me every day and let me remind you how much I care. You are special because I made you. And I don’t make mistakes.”

Be reminded today just how special you are to our Creator.

Pray: Father, today we thank you for calling us Yours.  Remind us of your great love for us and it is You that we look to for our identity.
