The LORD is our Strength

“But as for me, I shall sing of Thy strength; yes, I shall joyfully sing of Thy lovingkindness in the morning, for Thou has been my stronghold, and a refuge in the day of my distress.  O, my strength, I will sing praises to Thee; for God is my stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.”

– Psalm 59: 16, 17

Every day of our lives we make choices. Some are simple choices like what will I eat for dinner or what will I wear today. Some are more life-changing like who will I marry or what job will I take. In Psalm 59:16 David made a choice, he said “but as for me”. King Saul had sent his men to kill David, but David chose to recognize his God as his strength, stronghold, and his refuge. He chose to sing joyfully and sing praises to His God!

Spiritually we have choices.  We have an enemy of our very souls that we so often forget! The Bible says that Satan has come to steal, kill, and destroy but JESUS has come to give us life more abundant. We are saved eternally in JESUS Christ, but Satan would like to defeat us and make us ineffective for God’s kingdom; therefore, we must always keep alert to his tactics of deception. We are told in Ephesians 6:10, to be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might, not in our strength and might but His. We need to remind ourselves every day that we serve a mighty God!

In verses 16 and 17 of Psalm 59, we see just a few of our great God’s attributes. It says that He is our refuge and strength. In Psalm 61:3, David is crying out to God and says He is a tower of strength. The LORD is our refuge, a shelter, a place of escape, a retreat to refresh and restore our soul. He is our strength when we feel we are depleted of all strength. Jesus says, “Come to Me, all those who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28. To be honest, in the days we are living, I become weary of fighting this spiritual battle of life sometimes. How about you? Our own abilities and strength will fail us but the LORD’S strength and ability will never fail. Let us choose to run to the LORD who is our high and strong tower. He is our strength, our refuge, and our mighty stronghold!

Pray: Father God, I praise You for Your Word that speaks to our hearts. How we praise You that You are our strength and refuge. Remind us of these truths when we so easily forget. We want to do as David did, to joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning when we rise. Thank You that You are our strong tower and we can run to You and be safe. In the name of Jesus, the name above all names we pray, Amen
