A Devotional:

Super Glue

“And he is before all things and in him all things hold together.”

– Colossians 1:17  ESV

I absolutely love this verse. He, Jesus, is before all things! This means that Jesus is above it all and was here before it all.

Verse 15 tells us that God showed His image and His love through Jesus, the firstborn of all creation.

Verse 16 tells us that Jesus was a part of the creation process. It was all created for Him and by Him.

Then comes verse 17. Jesus is before all things and He holds all things together. What does that last part mean?

Think about it like this. You’ve made a nice big mug of hot chocolate. The steam is billowing out of the top of your favorite ceramic mug. The ratio of marshmallows to liquid is just right. As you grab the mug from the counter to take your first sip, the nerve endings in your fingers send signals to your brain that says one word: HOT! In surprised pain, you drop the mug on the ground. Now, the liquid is everywhere, and there is a large chunk of your mug that has broken off. Not to worry. You have Super Glue. After cleaning up the liquid, you take the tube of glue and begin to carefully reassemble the mug with the help of this, not so ordinary, bonding agent. When it’s dried, you can still see the crack, but the mug is once again made whole and can be used for its purpose.

That’s why I love verse 17. Jesus is my Super Glue. I was broken. I could no longer be what I was made to be because of my sin, but Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for my sin and make me whole again. He is holding me together. I’m still human and I still sin. You can see the cracks in me, but even though you can’t see Jesus, He’s there holding me together. Yes, even now, Jesus is holding me together.

Pray: God, thank you for creating me and all that you have placed in my life. Thank you for loving me even though I’m broken. You sent your Son to die on the cross for me to make me whole and redeem me. Please keep holding me together and help me to cling to You during the good days, as well as the bad.
