A Devotional:

Let God be your GPS

“For the Lord watched over the path of the Godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.”

– Psalm 1:6

I wasn’t sure where I was going recently and my oldest son, JW, said, “You can look it up on your phone, Mom.”  He was right.  I smiled, realizing he will really never have to get out an old school map when he’s lost and look for directions.  Do people still put those in their glove box anyway?  Let’s be honest, Global Positioning System (GPS) on our phone is so convenient.  My minivan even has its own GPS built in it.  With the help of satellite, we can, not only chart a route to where we’re going, but we can pinpoint exactly where we are right now.  We’ll never be lost again.

God offers us His very own GPS as standard equipment when we turn our life over to Him.  The best part is that this guidance system never wears out or needs repair.  All we have to do is choose to use it.  God’s guidance system utilizes the Bible and the Holy Spirit, and even biblical mentorship.  Sometimes we might lose our way or find ourselves on the wrong road.  We need to know the direction God has for us.  Some people rely on their feelings to help them make decisions.  That’s no good.  Our feelings may change from day-to-day, so they cannot be trusted to guide us in the right direction.

God has given us the Bible to show us how to enjoy this life He’s given us and find purpose in His plan for us.  Throughout the Bible are stories of people, just like us, who long ago went through the same things we face now. It also holds some basic rules about what’s right and wrong.  We need to weigh our decisions against what God has said in black and white.

I can’t imagine taking a trip without a GPS to help me find the way and I can’t imagine trying to navigate life’s journey without the Holy Spirit to guide me.  Here are some passages that give us insight as to how the Holy Spirit works.  If you will tap into the Holy Spirit, without fail, you will never need to worry about losing your way.

Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

John 16:13 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth…”

There are times I can’t seem to make sense of the road God has placed me on.  Yet I know He will never lead me down the wrong route or leave me when the road gets rough.  He’s not only more reliable than a satellite, but on a very personal level, He’s infinitely more interested in my destination, as well as every inch of my journey.  So follow God’s direction, one turn at a time.

Pray: Father – help me to trust You with my decisions and my future.  Your word says that You will always guide me.  When I am uncertain about what I should do, show me Your ways.  When I don’t know which way to turn, teach me Your paths.  In everything I do, I ask You to guide me.  As I submit myself to You, I know that You will direct my path and I can have confidence that Your direction is always the best way to go.  Amen
