A Devotional:

Business Trip or Tourist?

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

 Phil. 3:20

If you have done any traveling outside the country, you know there is something very important you must keep with you and that’s your passport. A passport is an official document issued by a government, certifying the holder’s identity and citizenship, entitling them to travel under its protection to and from foreign countries. In order to secure a passport, you need to submit a copy of your birth certificate.

God’s word tells us that we are not born citizens of God’s Kingdom, but we can become one through faith in Christ Jesus.  Jesus, tells Nicodemus, one of the religious elite of His day, “most assuredly, I say to you unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

Are you a citizen of heaven? Whose kingdom do you belong to? The worlds or heavens? Have you received your Rebirth certificate by placing your faith in Jesus? If you have, then God has issued you a passport certifying your identity in Christ. You and your citizenship are now under His protection; you also have all the privileges and benefits of being a citizen of the Kingdom of the God most High. You are now under the care and control of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. You are now a citizen of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken (Heb. 11:28). However, along with those privileges and benefits comes great responsibility.

We must understand that this world we are currently living in is not our home (1 Peter 2:11-12, Heb. 13:14). When you go to a foreign country you are required to have a visa. When you apply for a visa, you are asked if it is for business or if you’re a tourist. All believers have a return ticket back to our Kingdom where we are citizens and no one knows the time or day of that return. God has not left us here to take in the sights and gorge ourselves on the things this world has to offer. No, He has called us and sent us to be about our Master’s business. We are to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matt.28:19-20a). We don’t know when our visas expire, but our time here is but a vapor (James 4:14) and then we will return home. So, this question begs to answer by us all, to whose kingdom are you a citizen and are you on a business trip or are you just a tourist?

Pray: God, I pray for the lost in my family, my neighborhood, my community, my state, and this entire world. God, help me to be bold in my witness and to share the good news of Jesus Christ with all those I can. Help me, God, to not become a tourist here, but to be faithful to the business that is the Great Commission.
