A Devotional:

Are You Listening?

“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious; I have not turned away.”

These verses describe the coming of Christ. The New Testament tells us that Jesus prayed often (Luke 6:12, Luke11:1, John 17). He heard from and obeyed the Father wholeheartedly.  He also encouraged His disciples to pray (Luke 18:1). The Lord wants us to pray so that we can hear His voice and obey Him. In doing so, He gives us wisdom in using our tongues to encourage and build others up!

Recently, I offered to babysit a friend’s 4-year-old son so she and her husband could have a date night. She left me with these instructions!  “When he begins to cry uncontrollably, cup his face with your hands, look him in the eye and calmly let him know it’s ok.”

In this season of our lives, I feel like the Lord is holding our faces with His Hand and looking us in the eye to get our attention. With a calm voice, He’s saying to us: “It’s OK.” He wants to clearly speak to us and wants us to obey. The question is, are we crowding His voice out with social media, with Netflix or with activities that drown out His voice? Or are we looking Him in the eye and listening to what He is saying to us?

Pray: Lord, please help me to wake up tomorrow with ears that are ready to hear Your voice, a heart that is ready to receive Your instruction, and hands that willing to serve. In Jesus Name I pray.
